14 Kids? Seriously?

Okay, I get the fact that she didn't want to do selective reduction, but why have that many implanted at the same time? IDK...I wasn't going to post about it, but my infertile side is coming out. It just doesn't seem right...something isn't right about this.

Here are my evil thoughts:
  • Why is it fair for her to have 14 kids and some to have none?
  • Is she equipped to handle 14 kids? She lives with her parents already and apparently there hasn't been a father in sight...what's up with that?
  • Is she going for her own reality show?
  • What RE in his/her right mind would actually implant that many embryos? I know that the final decision is left up to the patient (which is a little scary in itself), but come on...should there be some regulations put on this? Or should the patient continue to call her own shots? I'm torn about this one too. I don't want to take away patients' rights, but there needs to be some sort of "norm" for a situation when a patient asks for something that is not medically sound...for herself and the babies. Then again, in a case like this, where everyone is doing fine...it seems medically sound.
Here are my good thoughts:
  • If this woman wanted 14 kids...more power to her. It's her choice and while I could never do it, she needs to live with her choice.
  • It is scientifically amazing that all of those embryos took and she was able to carry them to viability.
I don't know...I'm really torn about this. It bothers me that she lives with her parents (and why wouldn't she? Taking care of 6 kids is hard...taking care of 14? Who is she going to move in with next?). It bothers me that we haven't heard about a father. What does she do to make money to support all of those kids? I guess the whole thing is a little unnerving for me since I went through IVF...when is enough enough?

There is no way in hell that it was IVF. I heard her dad say that the embryos were implanted, but I guarantee they were not. That was either an IUI by a stupid doctor, or the doctor told her not to have sex because there were too many follicles and she didn't listen.

I agree with you! I would bet it was IUI. The doctor was SO irresponsible! And to do IUI when she already has 6 kids?? Or any fertility treatments for that matter? That is just insane and unethical.

Not to mention all the problems, developmental delays and the costs associated with that. It just makes me sick. And the general public never thinks about that side of it. Although I did see a short piece on ABC where they discussed the dangers (briefly).

I agree! Yesterday on the Today show they had Dr's that were speculating it was ovulation induction with IUI or time intercourse. But I did hear today they had embryos "implanted".
But I just can't believe that it was IVF. I hate that they are saying that it was IVF because it makes IVF look bad to those who know nothing about it. As those that have been through it know IVF does not (usually) cause high order multiples, contrary to what the general public believes. And another thing that bothers me is that she is probably going to get some sort of government assistance (welfare, WIC, etc...) when it was her CHOICE to have that many children.
But I am happy that the babies all seem to be doing well.

Here's how she likely affords her kids: W-E-L-F-A-R-E in addition to food stamps, free childcare if she actually works (likely she does not work), WIC (all these things can be used together- insane!).

My best guess is that this is yet another fertility f*up (IUI with not enough monitoring or telling a patient not to have sex and they do). Idiot doctor and sounds like idiot patient.

Okay I'm done now lol.

Now people like the Duggars who have what like 18 kids, they are a little odd in their ways but they absolutely afford their family and don't get public assistance. That to me is acceptable but to these crazies like you mentioned, it pisses me off.

totally an iui over stim situation, and it;s annoying because she probably didn't need fertility treatment in the beginning, makes us all look bad.
