One of the best things that I did when the babies were...well, babies is to give them some "alone time" before their naps. I tried as much as I could to get them on some sort of routine and this really helped. The fact that I'm still using it (and am going to milk it for all it's worth) tells me that it's worth blogging about.
When we get up from our naps, we change diapers, and have bottles. Right after that, we get on the floor and read a multitude of books. Sometimes the kids are in their bebe pod chairs and sometimes they're lying down on the blanket. Then we play with rattles or stuffed animals or sing songs or play in the exersaucer/jumperoo. Right around this time, they're starting to get a little cranky, so I announce that it's time for "alone time." It's almost like they know what this is...a little time to decompress by yourself. I put one in the swing and one in the bouncy (I used to try to alternate, but Matt tried to roll himself over while in the bouncy, so not so safe anymore). They sit in there and make their noises, sing, laugh, cry...whatever until it's time for their nap. It is the best thing that I have done b/c it has not only allowed me time to make breakfast (a biggie), but to clean up, wash bottles, start laundry, check my email, take a crap, whatever! I am going to use it until I can't do it anymore...eventually they will grow out of the swing/bouncy and my life will need to change again...what will I do?
So, that's my big thing for today. Oh, we went to storytime at the library with Jenny and her son...it went pretty well! Hailey listened intently to the reader (of course). Matthew needed to move around a lot and lost his shit when I let him sit on his own (for a fucking second) and he toppled over only to klunk his head on the floor (which was much harder than I thought). He wasn't too happy with me, so I had to hold him the rest of the time while Hailey stayed seated nicely in the crook of my knee. I think we're going to do it again. It gets us out of the house, reading, and social...what could be better? We couldn't do the craft though b/c I believe that entails actually knowing what those things at the end of your arms are able to do! My kids aren't there yet! Have a good one!
