I Have No Words

Seriously...there are NO words coming out of the kids' mouths! They understand everything...they follow instructions...they babble...they try to talk when requests are made. The only problem is that they aren't saying any words...at 16 months! The pedi said not to worry until 18 months. Other mothers have told me that their kids were like that and then all of the sudden, at 18 months, it started and never stopped. Could they have that special "twin language?" If that includes slapping each other in the face, pushing each other, head banging, and biting, then yes...they have a special twin language! No, honestly, they do seem to understand each other and concoct little plans to drive me crazy throughout the day!

Disclaimer: I'm not one to worry b/c I still feel that they're basically on track. The fact that they will put their clothes in the hamper, bring me their sippies for refills, come to the sink to wash their hands, and take each other's dirty diapers to the diaper pail is encouraging. It's just that I want a little more verbal action. So, don't feel like you have to coddle me too much here...you could make fun of me if you want! I don't care...I'm just venting about the latest thing to cross my mind.

I know, I know...I'm going to regret this when I can't get a moment of peace around here, but has anyone else experienced this?

BTW...is there a problem when I'm more upset that Nancy O'Dell is leaving Inside Edition than Oprah retiring...I think I'm a little f-ed up, no?

Don't freak out just yet...I'm in the same boat with our son. He's almost 16mo and barely says a thing other than his own personal babble language - which includes lots of pointing. He follows directions perfectly and seems to know just about everythign we tell him, but he's not talking. I hear him say dada and mama, but not in reference to us...he's said cookie, dog and other words on occassion, but they don't last...one-hitters.

My ped said not to worry too...he really only needs 3-5 words right now and by 18 months should have much more...we'll see!!!

YES you are f...ed up ... Nancy O'Dell?!? Seriously?!? haha!!!

Edie and Ella are the same way ... they are pushing 22 months now and aren't stringing words together, etc. They communicate VERY effectively and can say several words but not full sentences.

Here's what I would do ... online you can buy (yeah you like that English) (I think it's a DVD series) My Baby Can Read ... and after you start that if they are not talking/reading by 17.5 months ... PANIC!!! teehee

Don't freak out too much, but DO be pro-active! If something's really bothering you and you aren't sure of your pediatrician's answer, keep pushing. Maria was the same way at 16 months...pedi said wait til 18 mos. At 18 month appt. she said "Oh don't worry. Let's wait til her 2 year check up." I didn't like that answer. I had her evaluated by a speech therapist...turns out she had a 27% expressive speech delay. Not huge, but still a concern. We put her in a group speech therapy class for about 5 months and now she is communicating above age level. Good luck!

jeff and i noticed a big difference in their "language" from october to december when we saw them. there's much more babble and words that are close to the real words. they'll get there...no worries :)

One word: Einstein.

Why that word? He did not speak until AGE THREE. 'Nuff said! ;)

Hang in there...sounds like your kids are super on track to me...bet once they do speak, the eloquence will flow! ;)

AND, send me your address! You won a copy of See Mom Run! ;)

Blessings in 2010!

Mine are saying a few words, but I know my pediatricians like them saying 10 words by 15 months. They aren't doing that. They say mama, dada, no no, bye and no hitting. Is it sad that they say no hitting?

Oh, and I loved your story about the flower girl picking her nose.

If it makes you feel any better, my twins WILL NOT drink their formula from the sippy cups. They are still getting bottles. Blah. It's not like they will go to college drinking out of those bottles (it will be beer bottles then) and your kids will be talking up a storm in no time.

Your kids look (to me) bright as can be so I wouldn't worry BUT since I have turned into a worrier of note since I had the babies, I understand perfectly.

I'm all about getting peace of mind so if it's bothering you, go get a second opinion. Worse thing that happens it confirms you need some help and how's that bad?

I'm right there with you. I've read speech can be delayed in multiples...can't remember why. I'm moderately concerned about my girls as well. They understand practically everything but I would like to hear more from their mouths. I'm sure it'll come and then I'll wish for a little peace and quiet!
