QOTW: Getting In Shape

Multiples and More Question of the Week:  What do you do to keep in shape while on a busy schedule?

Let's face it, as a SAHM, my schedule is more flexible than it would be if I were working.  I get that.  I also get that I'm terribly lucky that my gym has child care that I trust.

Here's my basic schedule:

Monday - Ball & Weights at the gym...a hellacious class that kicks my ass and makes it difficult to sit on the toilet, much less go up and down stairs.  I nearly threw up during my first class and yet I continue to go back.  I can't help myself...I love it.

Tuesday - This is my day.  Every other week, I get my nails done.  Other than that, it consists of running errands, catching up on housework, or making phone calls (because we all know that phone calls are just about impossible with The Crazies around).

Wednesday - Strength Yoga at the gym...this is the class in which I dislocated my patella (and subsequently had to have knee surgery with two-year old Crazies running around), but I continue to go back.  I love this class.  I love the instructor.  I love the way it makes me feel when I can go from a doing three slow tricep push-ups to a plank to a hover.  Just being able to be strong enough to do that makes me happy.  I can also mention that I do feel more centered after this class and it has done a lot for my flexibility.  I can do a front fold with my palms on the floor next to my feet.  That makes me happy and allows me to think that I'll live longer (although, I have no proof of that).

Thursday - Cycling at the gym...instructed by the same crazy lady as my Monday class and I love it too.  It totally kicks my ass and I SUCK at going fast, but it's a great cardio workout.  Even though I hate to sweat, I like to think of this as fat liquefying and pouring off my body.  Yes, I even have to talk myself into sweating.

Friday - Groceries.

I am trying to integrate a class or two on the weekends.  For example, since I lost two workout days this week due to Matt's Sick, I went to the gym for about 3 hours this morning.  I can assure you that I have never.done.that.in.my.life.  It wasn't horrible though.  Husband stayed home with The Crazies and I was able to concentrate on my workout.  I was too late for the cycling class, but I did my own balls & weights workout downstairs, did some leg weights to maintain the strength in my knee, and then made it to yoga (where there were 49 fucking people in the room)!!!

When the Crazies were young, I didn't feel comfortable leaving them in the childcare, so I'd go when Husband got home from work and he'd go after they went to bed.  It was horrible.  Neither of us were getting good workouts and it's a priority in our life.  Once they were a bit older, we changed our whole schedule.  Now, Husband goes to work at 6AM so he can leave early enough, go to the gym/run, and be home by dinner.  I go during the day.  It works for us.  It has to be a priority for us because we both have heart disease in our families...we're fighting that every step of the way.

Some people would say we're nuts for putting so much of an emphasis on working out, but we're okay with that.  It works for us.

So, what do you do to keep in shape with a busy schedule???

Have I ever told you that you're my Hero? I'm in awe (and great envy) of this routine! I'm so at the mercy of my day-to-day/weekly schedule to make it to the gym. I've "made" time in my schedule this year but its just the 45 minute window between work and daycare pick up. Its so limited and if there's an after-school/work meeting or evening plans - the gym loses. I'm still getting there 1-3 days a week but I'd rather get there at least 3-4 days and have time to do running AND weights...but right now its one or the other. I'm too beat at night to go back out after the kids are in bed. Anxious for the summer again when I have more time to get to the gym and am able/willing to go later at night again.

Love your schedule. Right now mine is basically, go for a run every other day after Scott gets home. I'm trying to work in some other things as well, maybe I will try that Shake Weight, lol.

I'm so jealous you even have a schedule. I can't remember the last time I exercised. I can tell you this- I'll need to remember soon because this weight isn't going to slide off on its own.

monday through friday my alarm goes off at 4:55. i get up, put gym clothes on, grab my bag and head out. monday, i run for 25 minutes, then do bootcamp, then i'm home all day with the kids. tuesday i do 10 min on the rower, then the bootcamp class then go to clinic for the day. wednesday i do an interval cardio workout, then bootcamp, then am home all day with the kids. thursday i do a core class, then teach a class at school and come home in the early afternoon. friday i do a specific weight workout, then spinning, then i'm at work. writing :(. gross. saturday i'm off totally. sunday i do the 8am spinning, so i get to really sleep in :)

good for you and husband for taking such an active role in your health. you can only control so much and it sounds like you guys do a great job of it.

I have to go in the evenings when hubby is home. No daycare at the free gyms I have access to, and I would rather go to one of the three free gyms than to one I have to pay for. If I can't get to the gym enough I just run at home on the treadmill and hope to go for some runs once it warms up.

It kind of drives me insane when people give me a hard time for making exercise such a priority, but I'm glad you understand it! I schedule exercise just like I would anything else in my life---appointments, meetings. It's also an hour of my day that is just for ME. It relieves my stress, makes me sleep better, etc etc. I make it work!

We totally schedule things around when we workout. Hubby gets home from work at 4, and does it then, there is no way he would do it in the am LOL. :) I'm proud of you guys, you seem to be doing awesome!

I'm just starting to get myself back into a routine. I need to make it more of a priority. Right now I run M, W, F while S is at school and the baby naps. And then I do something (usually a run) on Saturday and Sunday. I have no idea what I'm going to do when she stops napping. I just got a double BOB for running but the thought of pushing 80+ lbs around my hilly neighborhood...ugh. I guess it'd be a good workout though!
