It's here...that wonderful age where the Crazies are interested in the computer.
I've been dreading this and even though I want then to know his to use computers, I know this can be a slippery slope into transforming into mindless drones drooling while staring at a computer screen.
They are totally into looking at Lego videos and playing the games on that website. The thing is, they're thinking they can do this any time and that the laptop is theirs. Which it's not...
So, let me have it...how go you handle technology in your house???

I'd set a timer. Half an hour on the computer, then one hour of some other kind of play. You decide on the amount of time you think is appropriate.
oh man. not looking forward to this. i have a friend who has a kid who is 2 who has her own ipad and iphone. seriously. to play games on. and aps and shit.
my kids think that the computer is for skype :)
...but then again we JUST entered the world of technology with uverse (we're sooo be hind the times). hahaha.
k plays on the ipad almost whenever she wants. all the games/apps we have are educational (colors, numbers, alphabet, puzzles, etc). she goes thru stages where the use gets to be too much so we put it up and limit her time, but generally speakin she spends, maybe, an hour total through out the day on it.
So glad you asked this...my kids think that computers with games are only at the library and only for big kids right now, but I know the day is coming soon where they will want to play. Looking forward to reading your responses!!
My girls will be 4 in a few weeks and they fight over the laptop. We set timers for 15 min increments and they play games on nickjr. They usually last thru 2 rotations so about 30 mins each. I do not let them play with my iPad, though. I am not budging on that one. :-)
Mine aren't sucked into technology as much as many kiddos. They all have a Leapster or LeapPad, but can go months without ever pulling it out to play with it or play with it every day for a week.
I only let them use the desk top as the mouse is easier for them to use and so far they all play on Starfall. I think moderation is the key. Figure out the best time for them to play a game morning, afternoon, etc and use a timer to help them see how long they get to play.
My girls don't use the laptop (no one touches the MacBook!!), but they do play our phones and the new iPad. The games are of the educational sort--actually, they like the drawing app the best--and they know which games are theirs and they can navigate to what they want to do.
As with most things, the 3-year-old attention span is not great, so it lasts 15 minutes or so most of the time. We also have ground rules--no walking around with the iPad, things like that.
I like the idea of a timer if the kids are spending too much time on the computer/games/whatever!
It's pretty much Wii, iPad, or DS. Puck gets to use the computer from time to time but usually the iPad is all he needs and requires less oversight and help from us.
I have two under two. Unfortunately the Sesame Street is often used to distract the older child while I'm putting the baby to sleep. Papa has given her her own phone already (no service) and it has several games and can stream Netflix as well. She gets more TV than I would like but otherwise she hasn't had much other exposure. She is only 19 months so she doesn't understand well enough yet to ask for it.
I don't have much to comment on idea here but we have limited our kids screen time a lot, too. We rarely let them play on the computer at home - Paul uses his for work so his is pretty much off limits and I don't use my computer much during the day and its in the den so they don't 'see' it to ask for it much.
They do use my iPad a few times a week at most, but I set a timer for anywhere from 5-20 minutes for each kid to get a turn.
Sometimes I think I should let them use the computer more b/c they need to know how to get around it sooner than later...but at the same time I don't want them sucked into computer games and such all the time.
We let them use our laptops very rarely to play on starfall. Other than that, they do have some games on our phones and my old iPhone is for them to use exclusively.
